Beach Volleyball in George TownWe play recreational beach volleyball. Why we play: To have fun, get a workout and socialize with our friends. Where we play: On the beach at the Chat'n'Chill bar. We have 6 courts, the bar owns the land but the courts where build and are maintained by the cruising community. The George Town Cruising Regatta supplies net, bounty lines and balls each year. When we play: December through April. Open Court volleyball starts at 2:30 each afternoon. Open Court means that when a game is finished the players leave the court and new players walk on. If there are not enough new players then the players that just finished may fill in. Before 2:30 there are sometimes private volleyball games going on but as a general rule any game that starts after 2:30 is open to anyone that wants to play at that level. Court #1 (closest to C'n'C) is by far the best court and is reserved for Fun volleyball for any game that starts after 2:30 whenever there are Fun volleyball players. So please don't start a private game on court #1 after 2:20 if it's a fun volleyball day. (hint: There are many different levels of volleyball here so if you are new to the beach, please watch a game being played and if you want to play at that level walk onto the court after a game.) Levels of Volleyball: Fun: 9 player teams. The team can hit the ball as many times and in as many ways as are needed to return the ball over the net. You can serve the ball from anywhere in your court. No spiking. Played by players aged 15 and above. (hint: rule #1: Don't hurt yourself or anyone else—the oldest person I know of on the court in 2005 was 75 years old) Regulation 6 player: Not played very much anymore.
Special Rules: We play in a diamond shape formation (see above photo), the person at the net is the Setter. When the ball comes over the net it is normally played first by one of the spikers or the back person. The SECOND HIT belongs to the Setter, no matter where it is going and you should keep out of the Setters way. If the Sitter can't get to the ball he/she calls for HELP as soon as possible and only then should other players play the ball. (If the ball is coming at you and you can play the second ball without moving, please call for the ball LOUDLY so the Setter will stop and not run into you). WHY?? The nearest hospital is 140 miles away in Nassau, or 400 miles to Miami, or entirely too many miles to Canada. Regulation 3 player: the same as 4 but without the Back/Server player. Regulation 2 player: In 2005 we had about 10 players for 2's. We aren't up for a AVP tourament but there senior tour starts at age 23 and for most of us that was a long time ago. OK, that's volleyball. I play all the above games unless I'm hurt and then I play bridge or domino or oh hell or bocce ball or..............see the Volleyball Beach page |
